Gleeds’ Ambassador, Sir Steve Redgrave attends fundraising event at Glasgow Academy

International management and construction consultancy, Gleeds, sponsored a fundraising dinner for The Glasgow Academy last night, with its global ambassador Sir Steve Redgrave in attendance as guest speaker. The event, attended by over 300 local guests, raised £25,000 through a charity rowing competition involving pupils from the school. The money will be used to help fund a new SciTech building on the campus.

Sir Steve, who has been the ambassador for Gleeds since 2006, was also invited to discuss his experience as an Olympian. He reflected on how the opportunities presented to him whilst at school influenced the choices he made in his career.

The five time gold medalist then attended a school assembly on Friday, speaking to pupils about the importance of perseverance, resilience and performing under pressure. Commenting on the event, Sir Steve said: “It is fantastic to see the impact the Commonwealth Games has had on the city and how it has inspired the local community. Commentators often view legacy exclusively in terms of building and infrastructure projects, however the human element is just as crucial”.

Alan Dickson, Gleeds Director for Glasgow, said of the evening: “This event was a fantastic opportunity for the Academy’s alumni, parents and special guests to come together in support of the new £10million Glasgow Academy Science Centre, opening next year. And to be inspired by Sir Steve’s achievements and reflections. Being part of the local community is important to Gleeds, so we were delighted sponsor this special event.”
